Varian Medical Systems (Varian) is one of the leading manufacturer of medical devices and software for treating cancer and other medical conditions with radiotherapy, radiosurgery, proton therapy and brachytherapy. Varian operates in three business segments that include: Oncology systems, X-ray products and others. Oncology systems offer radiotherapy products, brachytherapy operation and surgical sciences. Under X-ray products the company supplies X-ray tubes and flat-panel image detectors for X-ray imaging.
During 2002-2006, Varian’s total revenues increased at a CAGR of 16% from $873 million to $1,568 million. The increase was attributed to the sale of intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) and image guided radiation therapy (IGRT) enabled accessory products including On Board Imaging (OBI) and PortalVision products, and trilogy products.
Varian’s forecasts its revenues to increase at a CAGR of 13% from $1,598 million to $2,620 million during 2006-2010. The rise in revenues is mainly due to the new products RapidArc technology, Novalis Tx platform. In addition, the company would also receive revenues from order backlog, installations of OBI upgrades on IMRT systems.
