Survey of the European Yarn Fairs for Spring/Summer 2009
Textiles Intelligence, June 2008, Pages: 10
For some years, European spinners have focused on high quality yarns for the luxury end of the textile market. This policy is now being supplemented by a drive to demonstrate care for the environment by using natural organic fibres and non-polluting industrial processes, and by developing new fibres from sustainable natural sources. At the Pitti Immagine Filati yarn fair in Milan there was a display which demonstrated that “eco-friendliness” is now an inseparable part of selling to the luxury market. Spinners report that the demand for organic fibres, although still scarce and expensive, is growing.
Apart from that, manufacturers are confronting economic uncertainty by offering yarns of a fineness and sophistication never seen before. Colours for the spring/summer 2009 season are split between, on the one hand, a range of classic neutral tones in pastel and natural dye colours and, on the other, a contrasting range of clear, bright tones which include citrus, apple green, salmon and fuchsia. Furthermore, many spinners are using the bright tones to highlight the neutral colours.
But trade remains difficult, due in large part to the high value of the euro against the US dollar and the Japanese yen. European spinners are therefore looking at their prospects for the future with some pessimism.
