Market Sectors: Expert Frost & Sullivan analysts thoroughly examine the following market sectors in this research: - Airborne early warning aircraft - Maritime patrol aircraft - Combat aircraft
Market Overview: Defense Modernization Programs Propel Growth: Increasing military budgets and the urgency to modernize and replace old aircraft are driving the market for new aircraft and radar upgrades for better coverage in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. Airborne Early Warning (AEW) aircraft are receiving high priority, followed by maritime patrol aircraft to protect vital economic trade routes in the region. Furthermore, an increasing number of countries in the Asia Pacific region are realizing the importance of Network-centric Warfare (NCW) and are shifting their military doctrines toward a networked-defense strategy. NCW is expected to drive the market demand for better radar detection technologies, and a better-networked environment between various government agencies to enhance situational awareness of the battlefield.
However, the high cost of next-generation platforms with advanced radar systems is restraining their adoption among small and medium countries, which are yet to make their procurement decisions. 'Large ISR platforms such as the AEW have high procurement costs, and only large developed countries have the requirement and funding to acquire them,' notes the analyst of this research service. 'Most Asia Pacific countries only allocate a small proportion of their GDP toward defense and this trend is not likely to change much, with the exception of the more developed nations such as Japan, Singapore, South Korea, and Australia.'
AESA Radar Technology Leading the Way: Radar technology has evolved considerably since it was first introduced way back in 1941. Active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar technology leads the way in terms of improvements and is widely regarded as the radar of the future for all aircraft. AESA delivers superior coverage in comparison with the passive electronically scanned array (PESA) and the mechanically scanned array. Furthermore, AESA arrays move at almost the speed of light, giving the users fast and accurate data in real time. Developed countries in Asia Pacific are already upgrading to AESA radars, and some have even begun funding for local R&D in radar technologies.
Individually, Japan accounted for 39.8 percent of the total Asia Pacific air ISR radar market in 2007, followed by South Korea and Australia. 'These three developed countries have the funding and capabilities for procurements of new aircraft in 2007,' says the analyst. 'New AEW aircraft like the Boeing 737 AEW&C have been purchased by these countries while the new P-8 Poseidon aircraft is being considered as the new replacement for maritime patrol.'
Technologies: The following technologies are covered in this research: - Active electronically scanned array (AESA) - Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) - Multimode pulse doppler - Northrop multi-role electronically scanned array (MESA)
