Kitchen Intelligence: A Designer's Perspective
Research Institute for Cooking & Kitchen Intelligence, Jan 2009, Pages: 85
Conducted among two groups of certified kitchen designers who are members of RICKI's proprietary Kitchen Designer Panel, this study reveals trends in kitchen design as well as trends in nine specific product categories (refrigeration, dishwashers, range/ovens/cooktops, range hoods/ventilation, cabinets, cabinet hardware, faucets, sinks and countertops). The report also includes timely feedback about how the recession is impacting remodeling decisions. Specifically the research was designed to:
Kitchen Intelligence: A Designer’s Perspective was conducted to gather information on what professional kitchen designers say they are hearing from consumers regarding product preferences, design choices, overall kitchen layout and other kitchen remodelling-related issues.
Two group discussions with kitchen designers from across the country were conducted.
Nineteen kitchen designers were recruited from our proprietary designer panel using a screener survey after being contacted via email or telephone.
The kitchen designers were divided into two discussion groups based on the reported typical price of their kitchen projects:
1) General Kitchen Designers – typical project ranging from $20,000 to $74,999, and
2) High-End Kitchen Designers – typical project generally $75,000 or more.
The discussion was conducted over a period of three days, from December 3 through December 5, 2008. Discussions took place within an interactive online format. This type of qualitative study design allows for in-depth discussions of the topics and allows for a geographically diverse group of kitchen designers to participate.
Nine High-End Designers and 10 General Designers typically logged on once or twice a day to participate and respond to comments from the moderator or other participants. Each day the designers were presented with two or three topics to which to respond and comment – a format similar to that used in a traditional focus group but within a longer time frame allowing for thoughtful feedback given at the participant’s leisure.
Results from these discussion groups should be used for exploratory and informational purposes only. Because of the nature and size of the groups, quantitative projections cannot be made from any findings presented in this report
