Water Stress and Legislation Support Growth of Global Membrane Bioreactor Market
The global MBR market is experiencing double-digit growth, with numerous opportunities in industrial, commercial, municipal, shipboard, offshore and other applications. The Asia Pacific region has emerged as a strong market for MBR systems, following the established markets in North America and Europe, and could become one of the most promising and largest regional markets by 2010.
'Driven principally by legislation and water stress, the global MBR market will display double-digit growth,' notes the analyst of this research. 'Legislation is the primary driving force in Northern Europe and parts of the United States and Canada, while in other parts of the world, notably, Iberia, China, India, Australia and the Middle East, water stress is the dominant issue.'

Indeed, the two main factors driving growth in the MBR market are legislation, governing the effluent discharge standards, coupled with the stress on freshwater conservation through means of water reuse and recycling. Legislation has always been one of the strongest drivers for advanced water treatment solutions, such as MBR systems, in developed regions such as Europe and North America. It is now becoming an influential factor in the Indian and Chinese markets as well. Another strong driver for the expansion of the MBR market has been the increasing level of water stress, particularly in the arid regions of Australia and the Pacific Rim, the Middle East, parts of South Africa and North America and Southern Europe.

Alliances with Local Vendors Key to Market Penetration

The main issues that are restraining the expansion of the MBR market in emerging regions, especially in Asia and Latin America, are the lack of governmental support and limited availability of funds. This translates to import barriers for system components, administrative complexities and complex investment regulations.
'Certain Asian and Latin American markets are highly protected and not conducive to the entry of large multinational companies,' cautions the analyst. 'There is generally a profusion of local vendors that rather than meeting high and rigid international quality standards, offer low-cost solutions tailored to the local scenario and requirements.'

In such a situation, it is important to form joint ventures and strategic partnerships with local vendors. The aim will be to transfer technical and procedural know-how, while capitalising on their strong local presence and the consequent opportunities provided.
