Eastern Indian states consisted of Bihar, Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Orissa, and West Bengal are considered economically backward states of India, however, rich in minerals and coal. The region being in plain of river Ganges is agrarian in nature as West Bengal is known as ‘Rice Bowl’ of India.
If the states of Bihar, Chhatisgarh and Jharkhand are states of mines, it is the West Bengal, which has contributed to Indian society in area of social reforms and higher education. The other contribution of the region, to the nation in area of heavy industries, backed up by ore mines in the region. The statistics for the development of the region on the basis of indicators for development are provided under heads described below, briefly. General Info: This section provides statistics and data tables for Geographical Area district wise for the states in the eastern region under Geographical area. In Administrative Setup, District Wise number of Community Development Blocks/ MPP’s in the states are given. The statistics, from this section, helps one to understand the physical structure and functioning of administrative machinery in the states.
