Slovenia Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report Q3 2008
Business Monitor International, Aug 2008, Pages: 61
The Slovenia Pharmaceuticals and Healthcare Report provides independent forecasts and competitive intelligence on Slovenia's pharmaceuticals and healthcare industry.
Despite being smaller and more mature than most of its Central and Eastern European (CEE) peers, Slovenia is still regarded as a reasonably viable shorter-term prospect for pharmaceutical activities. In Q308, Slovenia is found in joint ninth place, alongside Romania, out of the 17 markets surveyed in the CEE region. The country’s ranking is negatively affected by its limited population number, negligible population growth and the country’s inadequate IP laws, as well as the low market growth forecasts. On the other hand, the expansive private insurance coverage and established trade regimes with Western Europe allow for good placement of novel drugs onto the market, which will be the main driver of growth over the coming years.
However, the government continues to strive to contain pharmaceutical expenditure through the introduction of limits on prescribing and the use of hospitals, among other measures. As part of this process, generics – mostly of expensive branded variety - may suffer price reductions in the coming years. In the meantime, the over-the-counter (OTC) segment will benefit from high consumer incomes, rising health consciousness and an interest in alternative medicines.
In terms of the pharmaceutical industry, difficult conditions in the home market will continue to push domestic players to expand abroad. To this end, in April 2008, Krka opened a new business centre in Former Yugoslav Republic (FYR) of Macedonia’s capital, signifying its commitment to other regional markets. In 2007, Krka’s sales in Macedonia reached EUR10mn in 2007, with the company being the country’s second-largest supplier of pharmaceuticals. Shortly prior to the opening of the centre, Krka revealed that its Q108 group sales were 19% higher than in the same period of 2007, reaching EUR243.7mn, with exports accounting for over 90% of total sales. Slovenian sales, however, dropped slightly to EUR24.9mn, illustrating the difficulties faced at home.
In the meantime, the Slovenian medical devices market is relatively advanced in relation to its CEE peers. Further commercial opportunities are provided by the country’s wealth, healthcare system modernization and rising patient demands. While imports have traditionally dominated the medical devices landscape, exports have recorded strong growth in recent years, with the main destinations being the territories of the former Yugoslavia.
