Market Overview

Significant Potential for Greater Penetration

The outlook for the African mobile market is favourable for all participants – operators, infrastructure partners, and content providers – but does offer some challenges. While the continent is still the world’s highest growth market, it already has some of the issues experienced by more developed mobile markets. For instance, operators are continually pressured to find new ways of generating revenues as average revenue per user (ARPU) levels decline steadily. Regulators and operators alike are placing increased emphasis on expansion into the continent’s rural areas, which often poses a number of difficulties. Rough terrain and remote areas are examples of this.

'Consistent downward pressure on mobile services tariffs and the introduction of cheaper handsets is making the mobile market more accessible to subscribers,' notes the analyst of this research. 'When this is combined with the fact that the continent still has mobile penetration levels of under 30 per cent, it is clear that there is great potential in this market.' The African mobile market showed an increase in penetration from 21 per cent in 2005 to 28 per cent in 2007, which gives an indication of the levels of growth currently being experienced by the continent. Sub-$30 handsets have been introduced and there is increased demand for second hand handsets. As a result, those previously unable to afford mobile services are finding it easier. Operators are also attracting new subscribers by offering low-cost starter packs and cheap airtime top-ups.

Poor Energy Infrastructure Creates Problems, Alternative Energy Sources Being Explored

While robust growth is expected, poor infrastructure continues to pose a problem. Current energy infrastructure is unable to cope with the ever-increasing demand for energy supplies. As a result, power shortages and interruptions are often experienced. This is a challenge to mobile operators and subscribers alike.

'Power interruptions add a costly dimension to Africa’s mobile market and affect both operators and subscribers,' explains the analyst. 'Diesel generators for base stations are a necessary expense and the situation is only likely to worsen as demand for power continues to rise.' The use of alternative energy sources has become increasingly important and while some companies such as Motorola and G24 have already realised this, most market participants have yet to address the challenge. Africa is uniquely positioned to both test and benefit from groundbreaking advances such as the use of solar and wind powered base stations.
