Excerpt

The past 14 months have proven to be an enormously challenging environment for the hedge fund industry. The sub-prime mortgage debacle and ensuing credit crisis in the summer of 2007 resulted in losses for many hedge funds. As banks became nervous, margin calls were made to hedge funds, resulting in forced selling which wreaked havoc for many statistical arbitrage hedge funds in August 2007. Equity markets in the US topped out in October 2007 and have been in bear territory since then. Emerging markets, particularly India and China, have been in freefall since last October. A few emerging market stock indices are down well over 50% from their highs, severely impacting emerging market funds. Many hedge funds that profited handsomely from rising oil and commodity prices for the past few years struggled this summer as oil and commodity prices retreated.
