The Survey of Academic Library Use of Instructional Technology
Primary Research Group, Oct 2008, Pages: 125
The report looks closely at academic library purchasing levels and evaluation of instructional technology for use in information literacy and other forms of in-library education. More than 80 college libraries provided data which is broken out by size and type of college for easier benchmarking. The 125 page report provides more than 365 tables of data and commentary. Just a few of the report's findings are:
- 21.62% of the libraries in the sample have purchased classroom response system technology. A third of doctoral & research universities have purchased this technology, as have a third of colleges with more than 15,000 students.
- Mean spending on classroom clickers for the libraries in the sample was $873.00 and ranged from 0 to $4,800.00.
- 20.55% of the libraries in the sample have purchased tablet computers for use in library education.
- Close to 38% of the libraries in the sample use wikis in their library patron education efforts.
- More than 27% of the libraries in the sample use social networking applications in their patron education efforts; private college libraries were more than twice as likely as public college libraries to do so.
- Mean spending in the past year for computers designed especially for library information literacy training or training computer centers was $15,773.
- Despite difficult financial times, a somewhat higher percentage of libraries in the sample said that they would be increasing than decreasing spending on new library instructional technologies over the next two years.
- 71.62% of the libraries in the sample have librarians that serve on a college or university-wide technology committee and an additional 8.11% have librarians that have served on one in the recent past.
- 89.5% of the libraries in the sample have one or more instructional computer labs located in the library. The median number of labs was 1, the mean, 3.38.
- Only 21.34% of the computers in the labs of the libraries in the sample are wirelessly networked.
