Omega-3 - Fad or Future? European and US Combo Reports
Leatherhead Food International, Jan 2008, Pages: 126
Prospects and implications for European product and market development, and the influence of the US market
In January 2008, Leatherhead Food International published a collaborative research project on the Omega-3 ingredient market and key supply structure in Europe and the US. This research also aimed to identify market trends in products enriched with Omega-3 and to highlight new product activity. An initial exclusivity period has lapsed and the report is now available for sale and should be of interest to anybody who is either currently involved in, or planning to move into, the Omega-3 market.
European Report
Background
Awareness of the health benefits of omega-3 varies across western Europe, and is highest in the UK, Spain and Germany. Penetration of omega-3 supplements is particularly high in the UK, whilst omega-3 enriched food products are especially prevalent in Spain. In the European markets, sales of foods enriched with omega-3 (such as dairy and bakery products) tend to be higher than those for infant formula and supplements featuring omega-3.
Coverage
The report will include the following sections:
- Ingredient Overview – A review of omega-3 ingredients available, as well as the key supply structure in Europe. - Market Overview – an overview of the omega-3 market by ingredient and end use application (food and supplements) in the major European countries. - New Product Review – recent new product activity in products containing omega-3 in Europe - Consumer Attitudes and Awareness – consumer knowledge and understanding of omega-3 in Europe. - Future Prospects for omega-3 in Europe.
From a geographical perspective, the market research will focus on the five major western European markets, namely:
- UK - France - Germany - Italy - Spain
Benefits
The report has the following aims:
- To estimate current and likely future food industry demand for omega-3 by type and end-market in key western European countries. - To identify the main users of omega-3 in the European food industry, as well as the types and quantities used by food and supplement manufacturers. - To identify the supply structure for omega-3 in Europe, as well as examine trends in new product activity. - To understand consumer attitudes to omega-3 in Europe.
US Report
At almost 90%, awareness of the health benefits of omega-3 is quite high amongst US consumers. In the US, omega-3 is most frequently consumed for its perceived heart health benefits, whilst growth is being aided by the fact that US consumers believe a higher amount of omega-3 in necessary for their diet than do their European counterparts. With sales worth over USD2.5bn, the US has a particularly sizeable market for omega-3 enriched infant formula.
