The incidence of diabetes in the elderly is reaching epidemic proportions, according to a new study of Medicare claims published last month in the Archives of Internal Medicine. Today, 40% of older adults have diabetes. The costs of caring for elderly people with diabetes are threatening to overwhelm the system designed to pay for their medical care.

Nine out of 10 of those diagnosed with diabetes in 1994 and 1999 developed some other ailment such as kidney failure, blindness and amputation within six years of diagnosis. To reduce these complications, those with diabetes should adhere to recommended care including regular monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, regular check-ups for eyes and feet, so the complications can be caught early and monitored.

Adult Day Service providers are well-positioned to be leaders in this critical area of health care. Through nursing care, meals, partnerships with caregivers and providers, and education programs, ADS can make a big difference.

Learn how you can strengthen your adult day services by participating in “How Adopting Diabetes Protocols and Monitoring Programs Can Strengthen Your Adult Day Services, Census and Bottom Line,” this special 90-minute audio conference took place in February 2008. This is educational session is sponsored by Adult Day Services Letter and NADSA.
