IP Phones Worldwide — On the Desk and Beyond
In-Stat/MDR, Dec 2008, Pages: 40
IP phones are moving in full force in both the consumer and business markets. Within the business market, corded IP phones remain the standard, and will continue to dominate the enterprise IP phone market throughout the forecast period. However, WLAN and IP DECT phones continue to grow.
Consumer VoIP services are predominantly being delivered through service providers through the use of an analog telephone adapter (ATA), with many consumers not knowing they have VoIP services, or requiring special IP phones. DECT phone systems dominate the consumer IP phone market, with corded phones predominantly being sold in specific regions of the world, or for SOHO use. Impacting both the enterprise and consumer IP phone markets are the Wi-Fi/cellular combination phones. While an increasing number of cellular phones contain Wi-Fi, only a certain percentage of them support VoIP.
This report includes market shares and forecasts through 2012 for corded, cordless, WLAN, and Wi-Fi/cellular IP phones sold for consumers and businesses.

Methodology
This report examines the emerging market for business and consumer IP telephones. The report presents shipment data, revenue, and ASP forecasts from 2007 through 2012 for corded, WLAN, cordless (including DECT), and dual-mode Wi-Fi/cellular IP telephones. The forecasts are segmented for business and consumer markets.
Sources of primary information include IP PBX manufacturers, voice-over-IP (VoIP) handset suppliers, VoIP and mobile service providers, and IP telephone chip makers. Market information and shipment data were collected through company telephone briefings and email communications. Where actual shipment numbers were not available, the author developed estimates based on the primary source data, including financial records. All revenue and ASP statistics discussed in this report are based on manufacturing revenue. Shipment statistics for cordless DECT phones represent base stations.
This report uses the terms WLAN and Wi-Fi interchangeably. For purposes of this report, the term “dual mode” refers to mobile handsets designed with integrated Wi-Fi/cellular VoIP operation. The term “dedicated” refers to the use of proprietary client software and/or proprietary protocols that prevent the IP device from operating with other VoIP systems or networks.
