Since the late 1990s, the number of new mobile phone subscribers has been approaching saturation in developed countries worldwide, and Africa has been experiencing a surge of interest from multinational telecom operators who are looking for new opportunities. Coupled with the rapid development of its mobile telecommunications market, Africa has lured many large-scale multinational telecom operators to invest due to factors illistrated within this report.
Coupled with their advantages in terms of finance and resources, multinational telecom operators have made forays into one or more African countries through mergers or acquisitions. Currently, multinational telecom operators with relatively large market scale include MTN, Zain and Orascom Telecom, which all operate in the Middle East and Africa. Coupled with share of Vodacom and France Telecom, the combined share of these multinational companies is estimated to account for 60% of the total market in Africa at end-year 2008.
