Franchising Market Report 2008
Key Note Publications Ltd, Dec 2008, Pages: 103
This Market Report examines the UK franchising market. It excludes two types of business relationships that are similar to, but not the same as, franchising: vehicle dealerships and tenancy agreements in the public house industry.
Franchising is one of the most robust markets of the economy — it spans almost every industry sector, and franchised brands usually perform well financially. As a result, unlike many other parts of the economy in 2008, this market has experienced a reasonably good year (as at December 2008). The franchising market consists of 13 industry sectors: dairy; property and maintenance services/home improvements; catering and hotels; cleaning and renovation services; commercial services; direct selling, wholesaling, vending and distribution; domestic, personal and caring services (including health and fitness and pet services); employment agencies, executive search, management consultancy, teaching and training; estate agents, business transfer agents, financial services providers and mortgage brokers; parcel and courier services; printing, design and signage; retail; and vehicle services. Within each of these sectors there are seven different types of franchise available in the UK: investment; management; executive; retail; distribution; depot; and job.
Some of the most famous business names in the UK operate franchises, for example: Bairstow Eves, The Body Shop, Domino’s Pizza, McDonalds, Thorntons and Thresher. Franchising has an especially high profile in a variety of industries, including: retailing; hotels and catering; domestic help; and business-to-business (B2B) services. The market is split into dairy and non-dairy franchises, with the total number of non dairy franchises standing at around 35,240 in 2008 (according to our estimates). In 2008, the combined turnover of the franchising industry was £13.3bn according to our estimates, which represents a 7.3% increase compared with 2007.
Franchising is a very lively sector that is constantly attracting new business. In 2008, the most popular areas of the market appear to be children’s services, food, pets, personal care and cleaning. The health and fitness industry also continues to attract interest from franchisees.
A key feature of the franchising market in 2008 is the increase in the number of franchisors setting up abroad. This trend continues to grow, partly under the impetus from home-grown franchisors, but also through the entry of foreign-based franchises, often from the US, Australia or New Zealand. We forecast a small increase of 2.3% in the turnover of the franchising market in 2009, and a further 3.7% in 2010. The number of franchised units is likely to grow by around 1% in 2009, and a further 2% in 2010.
