Italy’s nuclear renaissance helps the country to meet the electricity demand
Summary
All the nuclear reactors in Italy were permanently shut down in1990 considering the affect of the Chernobyl nuclear accident which occurred in 1986 in Ukraine. At that time four nuclear reactors were operating with the nuclear installed capacity of about 1423 MW. The Italy has even made plans to expand the nuclear capacity and construct more nuclear power plants in future and the Chernobyl accident made the country’s government to phase out the nuclear power. Currently, Italy imports about 10% of the nuclear power generated electricity and the electricity consumption in Italy has been increasing for the last couple of years and even the electricity prices are high when compared to the other European countries.
