This Frost & Sullivan research service titled World xDSL Test Equipment Market provides analysis on application segments, technology segments, end-user segments, geographic regions, and market share of participants. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: physical layer applications that include handheld test equipment, remote automated test equipment, and R&D and functional test equipment.

Market Overview

xDSL Test Equipment Market Ride Piggyback on Triple Play Service Deployments

Digital subscriber line (xDSL) test equipment owe a large part of their success to xDSL technology’s ability to evolve and provide triple play services. It is this offer of triple play that keeps broadband adoption rates increasing at a considerable pace even in times of economic downturn. xDSL must continue to demonstrate its ability to compete against new-age technologies such as fiber and cable to sustain consumer interest. Incumbent service providers {such as telecommunication companies (telcos)} of broadband technologies are compelled to face up to the challenge posed by novel technologies by providing triple play services in the DSL deployment to improve their average revenue per user (ARPU). Since they provide triple play service in their existing, aging copper lines, it becomes important to test and monitor these copper lines before and after xDSL deployment, which augurs well for the test equipment vendors.

“Meanwhile, legacy DSL technologies have successfully evolved due to the accessibility of alternate technologies at a time when there was a demand for higher rates for implementing Internet Protocol television (IPTV) and voice-on-demand (VoD) features,” says the analyst of this research. “The availability of techniques such as copper bonding that use inverse multiplexing methods and deep fiber rollouts with very high bit rate DSL2 (VDSL2) is expected to buoy the market.” However, test equipment vendors will have to be wary of the impact of the economic uncertainties, since it could lead to capital expenditure (capex) freezing by service providers, carriers, and network equipment manufacturers. Moreover, the deployment of DSL lines, and thereby, xDSL test equipment could take a hit with customers looking to stretch the use of the installed base during this phase of budgetary limits.

Test equipment vendors hope to offset some of these cost issues by offering improved features and functionality. “Owing to the need to develop cost-effective test equipment, the vendors in this space can seek greater integration of test solutions and satisfy the testing requirement of converging technologies used in deploying broadband,” notes the analyst. “They must also invest more in R&D to address complex testing requirements and offer easy-to-use equipment.”
