Increased Pipeline Construction for Energy Transmission Creates a Need for Pipes and Fittings in the Oil and Gas Market

A rise in demand for energy and power generation has impelled power infrastructure development, causing drilling activity levels to reach unprecedented highs. Pipeline construction and infrastructure development for energy transmission are emerging as significant drivers for pipes and fittings in the North American oil and gas market. The diverse sectors of power generation, transportation, industrial, and residential/commercial are demanding particular energy types. “For instance, liquid nitrogen gas (LNG) imports are expected to grow significantly in the next several years in response to higher prices and escalating costs of domestic supplies,” says the analyst of this research. “In fact, new construction and expansion of LNG terminals or LNG-related pipeline infrastructure are currently underway in several regions of the United States.”

Users’ increasing preference for alternative fuels such as natural gas is evident from the frantic pace of natural gas pipeline construction activity in 2007, which conformed to a growth trend that began slowly but at an intensified rate since 2005. The U.S. regulatory authorities have approved, or are planning natural gas pipeline expansion projects representing a potential 10,100 miles of new large pipeline and a capacity of approximately 103 billion cubic feet (Bcf) per day. “If all were actually completed, another 2 percent of pipeline miles would be added to the national pipeline grid and the overall network capacity is likely to increase by more than 38 percent,” notes the analyst.

However, pipe and fitting manufacturers should be wary of the competition from both domestic and foreign participants. Domestic participants will be challenged to stave off this problem since the devaluation of the U.S. and Canadian dollar has made cheaper imports from eastern Europe and Asia more appealing. They cannot compete with foreign manufacturers’ advantages of labor costs as well as lack of government taxation and stringent regulatory requirements. Meanwhile, the wide range of scenarios in the local market makes it difficult to establish and administer policies in ways that are fair and equitable to the whole gamut of industry participants. “In this environment, companies organized as stock corporations and forming partnerships that could support high levels of investments are strategically well positioned to succeed,” observes the analyst.

This Frost & Sullivan research service titled Pipes and Fittings in North American Oil and Gas Market provides drivers, restraints, and market challenges. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: oil and gas pipelines, energy transmission, and services.
