Many Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) have taken enthusiastically to virtualization – which EMA defines as “a technique for abstracting (or hiding) the physical characteristics of computing resources from the way in which other systems, applications, or end users interact with those resources.” Whether for small file server deployments, or for virtual desktops, EMA research has shown that SMBs have very similar drivers, outcomes, and concerns regarding virtualization as large enterprises, from desires to reduce costs and improve availability, to concerns about human issues such as skills shortages.

However, SMBs are not entirely like larger enterprises, especially when it comes to application virtualization. This Advisory Note explores some of the key differences, and provides a brief introduction to the most important application virtualization issues and solutions for small and medium businesses.
