Report Highlights
The employers liability market experienced a 45 per cent escalation in premium income in 2002 and swung deeper into the red than in any of the three preceding years. Substantial rate rises continued to be implemented as insurers struggled to meet the spiraling cost of claims.
Average rate rises in the professional indemnity market were 25-30 per cent in 2003 as underwriters attempted to make up for years of capacity shortage, claims inflation, weak investment income, poor underwriting performance and increases in reinsurance costs. The market is experiencing an expansion in capacity and a number of new entrants.
The directors and officers market is going through a significant growth phase as ever increasing scrutiny is placed on corporate governance practices. Hard market conditions have taken the place of the long, soft phase between 1995 and 2000 and volatility remains an inherent feature of this insurance class.
