European Market Revenues To Exceed US $1 billion in Coming Years The European market for organic vegetables is to show high growth in 2001 and 2002 to push market revenues above the US $1 billion mark in 2003. The organic potatoes product segment is the largest in the European market, accounting for a half of market volumes in 2000. Increasing penetration of organic foods in the major retailers is to provide the impetus for high market growth in the coming years. Although the profile of organic foods has risen sharply in recent years, there are still many countries in Europe that have organic vegetables restricted to specialist retailers. As organic vegetables continue to move into mainstream channels, the market is to continue to report double-digit growth. The supermarkets have only recently become the most important marketing channel for organic foods in Europe. Organic Monitor research shows the European supermarkets accounted for 45 percent of all sales volumes in 2000. The broadening of sectors within the organic food industry has seen the market share of food processors reach 18 percent. Direct sales and the natural food sector, which includes specialist organic retailers and health food shops, has seen a significant decrease in market share since 1997. Germans Projected to Continue to Lead Europe
