Russian PPE Markets
Frost & Sullivan, Jan 2009, Pages: 60
This Frost & Sullivan research service titled Russian PPE Markets provides drivers for growth, a market forecast and an analysis of the impact of the current global financial situation on market prospects. In this research, Frost & Sullivan's expert analysts thoroughly examine the following markets: above-the-neck PPE, respiratory protection, protective clothing, protective gloves and protective footwear.
Market Overview
Rising Safety Awareness Helps Step-up PPE Penetration in Russian Markets
Demand for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is set to rise in conjunction with the growing global awareness of the need to provide safe working environments. Historically, not all workers have been provided with a level of protection that is now considered appropriate. 'The recent boom in the construction industry, especially in Moscow, has seen a rise in accidents and injuries to workers,' notes the analyst of this research. 'The situation reached such an unacceptable level that the city’s mayor, Yury Luzhkov, had to intervene to resolve the issue.' This had an instant effect on the PPE market, with companies witnessing an immediate impact on their sales to the construction industry. Products such as fall protection benefited substantially, with increasing orders being placed for them.
Continued transparency over issues such as industrial accident rates will sustain PPE sales to the construction industry, driving market penetration rates. The mining industry also offers significant growth opportunities for the adoption of PPE.
There is ample scope for organic growth in the Russian PPE market, particularly in sectors where penetration levels are still relatively low. This applies most to gloves and above-the-neck PPE. In saturated segments, up-selling to current users by persuading them to purchase more premium grades of product will create opportunities.
Marketing Efforts Must Focus on Customer Needs to Drive Uptake
While there are untapped prospects for certified PPE as potential users at the lower end of the scale gradually recognise the importance of using effective PPE, the process of changing current attitudes will be slow. This is partly because of the lack of financial resources available for end-user companies to spend on PPE. Moreover, customers tend to be complacent, convinced about the efficacy of the conventional equipment that they have been using thus far. 'PPE suppliers still encounter customers with the view that 'if we could work with the equipment we had 40 years ago, we can still work like that now',' explains the analyst.
The best way to encourage workers to wear appropriate PPE again will depend on the product. For instance, users are aware of the need to wear gloves but choose not to because cheap and bulky gloves seriously hinder their ability to perform their jobs
- In this particular case, marketing efforts must, therefore, focus on the dexterity offered by the new generation of modern gloves.
