Islamic Investment Banking
Islamic Capital Partners, May 2008, Pages: 23
Investment Banks are firms that specialize in three broad areas of finance:
- Raising Capital - Advisory and - Dealer/Broker Function
They assist businesses and governments in selling their new security issues (debt or equity) in the primary markets to raise funds through initial public offerings (IPOs), rights issues or syndication. In addition, after the securities are sold, investment bankers make secondary markets for the securities as brokers and dealers. At times, the role of the investment banker begins much earlier. The investment banker acts as a financial engineer; designs and structures the security or instrument that is ideal or optimal for raising funds considering the client’s needs. On the advisory front, it is further involved in advising Governments on privatization, and corporates on restructuring, mergers and acquisitions and leverage buyouts etc.
Islamic Investment banks are able to offer wide variety of services offered by conventional Investment banks, however, the process and products are at times designed to comply with Shari’a.
