Drugs of Tomorrow 2001: Diabetes
Datamonitor, Jan 2002
The key unmet need in the diabetes market is centred around drug delivery formulations. Insulin, not only the gold standard treatment for type I diabetes, but also an increasingly recommended treatment for type II diabetes, must be administered by injection. Injection drug delivery is painful for and unpopular with patients, and results in poor compliance. The current insulins on the market face increasing threat of competition from products in the R&D pipeline which address this unmet needs. Indeed, the imminent arrival of the inhalation and oral insulins, which, for the first time, offer patients requiring insulin therapy a means of administering the drug by a formulation other than injection could change the face of insulin therapy and of the diabetes market as a whole. However, by no means do pipeline drugs address all the unmet needs in the current diabetes market: analysis of the pipeline highlights the gaps that remain and the potential available to the drug developer. Drugs of Tomorrow 2001: Diabetes provides an in-depth, critical evaluation of the key R&D compounds currently in development for the treatment of type I and II diabetes. In particular, the report evaluates the commercial prospects for the launch of innovative new products against the level of existing unmet needs in the diabetes market.
