Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is the common term for two related disorders, namely deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), both of which are serious medical conditions caused by the abnormal formation of blood clots. The incidence of VTE varies widely in different patient populations depending on the presence or absence of risk factors. Overall, the incidence is estimated to be 1.5-2 cases per 1000, but is substantially higher in high-risk populations, such as patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery who have a 50% risk of developing VTE. Given the large numbers of patients involved and the potentially fatal nature of VTE, management of the condition places a heavy burden, both financial and otherwise, on healthcare systems globally. Management of VTE can be divided into prophylaxis and acute treatment when the former fails (or is not employed). This report represents a thorough examination of all aspects of the current VTE acute therapy markets in the US, Japan and EU, and is focused on the information needs of pharmaceutical companies and medical equipment manufacturers. Based upon a survey of 220 physicians in seven major markets, this report sets out to: ?Determine the incidence of acute VTE in different patient populations ?Identify those physicians responsible for managing (prescribing, supervising, and monitoring) acute therapy for patients presenting with VTE ?Compare and contrast the diagnostic tests used for DVT and PE in the seven major markets with emphasis on discrepancies between physician preference and usage levels ?Analyze in-depth the different drug classes and brands, as well as the variety of surgical procedures used to treat VTE ?Gauge the awareness and perception among physicians of new drugs in development for acute VTE ?Determine the level of unmet needs in diagnosis, pharmacological treatment and surgery, in order to identify target areas for product development, improving physician and patient awareness, and focusing marketing campaigns. Treatment Algorithms 2002 Venous Thromboembolism Acute Treatment is the second in a series of two reports covering the VTE market. The research for Treatment Algorithms 2001: Venous Thromboembolism Prophylaxis, thefirst of the two reports, was conducted as a parallel survey. Taken together, the two reports outline all pertinent data for the VTE markets as a whole.
