Glyphosate is a kind of highly effective, low-toxin and broad sterilant herbicide with more than 20-year usage history. In recent years, because of the large-scale spread of the genetically modified crops all over the world, the demands for the glyphosate grow fast and gradually substitute other herbicides, the sales standing the first place for successive years in the world.

As the biggest manufacturer of the glyphosate in the world, the annual yield capacity of 200 thousand tons, accounting for 30% of the world’s yield capacity, Monsanto closed down a glyphosate production line with the annual yield capacity of 100 thousand tons in 2006 because of the business transformation and the environmental requirements. In the latter half of 2007, the international glyphosate price was up, even to 14 thousand USD per ton, stimulating the construction of new added yield capacity in large scale in China. China has been the biggest glyphosate producing country in the world with the yield capacity of 500 thousand tons. In 2008, the actual yields went beyond 300 thousand tons. It is predicted that the glyphosate yield capacity in China will be over 600 thousand tons and the world’s yield capacity will exceed 900 thousand tons in 2010. The glyphosate produced in China is mainly used to export, under the circumstances of product homogenization; the only choice to release and assimilate the yield capacity is to cut down the price.

From the latter half of 2008, due to the dropping price of international oil price and the deterioration of the expected energy alternative demands with the genetically modified crops as the raw materials, the glyphosate price was reduced sharply. For the demands, 530-thousand-ton glyphosate was run up in 2006 in the world, which kept rising with the growth speed of 7% in recent years. It is predicted the demands will be about 700 thousand tons in 2010. Because of the yield capacity surplus, the price will not increase unseasonably in the next several years.

Owing to the consumption of the storage products and the increased prices of the raw materials, such as yellow phosphorus and aminoacetic acid, in the beginning of 2009, the glyphosate price in Chinese market rebounded. The glyphosate producer price of Zhejiang Wynca Chemical Group Co., Ltd was 30 thousand Yuan (4.37 thousand USD) per ton. The knockdown price from the medium and small dealers in Yangtze River Delta was about 28.5 thousand Yuan (4.16 thousand USD) per ton. It is predicted that the average price of the glyphosate in the whole year of 2009 in China will be about 27 thousand Yuan (3.94 thousand USD) with the acceleration of the operation rate.

It was an important year for the development of Chinese glyphosate industry in 2008. Because the demands for the glyphosate were increased in recent years, the production scale of Chinese enterprises was also enhanced so as to gain more investment profits. However, those enterprises were also affected by the international financial crisis and the reduction in the downstream demands. In the end of 2008, because of the growth storage, many Chinese glyphosate enterprises stopped their projects in process.

In order to drive Chinese economy, Chinese government decided to improve the added value tax rate and the export tax rebate rate of partial commodities. The export tax rebate rate of the glyphosate products was enhanced from 5% to 9%. On 5th February, 2009, CAMEX decided to cut down the anti-dumping tax rate of the glyphosate produced by China from 2.9% to 2.1% for 5-year validity and took effect from 12th February, 2009. The annual sales amounts of the glyphosate in Brazil were 500 million USD and the market potential was huge, which propelled Chinese glyphosate industry.

According to the statistics, over 70 glyphosate enterprises have the registration. In 2008, over 20 enterprises obtained the original glyphosate product registration, exceeding the total amounts in the previous two years. At present, some low-level projects are still shutdown, and partial backward enterprises have been knocked out of the market.

The technically advantageous enterprises in scale grasp the opportunities of the market shuffle and recovery and enter the market quickly. On 28th February, 2009, the ten-thousand-ton original glyphosate technology reform project of Sichuan Huaying Chemicals Co., Ltd was landed in Xinjin with the total investments of 235 million Yuan (34.3 million USD). The whole project is predicted to complete in the end of October, 2009.

Experienced the sharp reduction in the glyphosate price in 2008, many Chinese glyphosate enterprises has intensified the change from original to preparation glyphosate. The domestic giants have extended their business towards the downstream preparation glyphosate.

For medium and long run, the demands for the glyphosate in the international market will be steadily grown with the gradual growth of the international biological energy and the planting areas of the genetically modified crops.
