Operating Systems Used in Embedded Systems - Volume 3: Embedded/Real-Time and Mobile OS
VDC Research Group, Inc. , June 2008, Pages: 80
As part of its Embedded Software 2008 Market Intelligence Service, VDC Research Group (VDC) is pleased to release a study covering the worldwide market for embedded/real-time and mobile application operating systems employed in the development of embedded and mobile systems.
Specifically, our research efforts focused on the markets for: - Real-time operating systems (RTOSs) as well as non real-time operating systems used in embedded applications; and - Mobile application operating systems used in embedded applications.
MARKET OVERVIEW
Years ago, it was easier to identify an operating system vendor as a discrete type of supplier within the embedded software market. With increasing demands from embedded systems companies, expanding software requirements driven by the provision of more complex hardware components, and persistent competition among software providers – today’s embedded operating system vendor is quickly becoming a jack-of-all-trades. As a result, the majority of operating system suppliers currently competing within the embedded market are also in the business of providing development tools, middleware, professional services, and other key solution elements critical to their customers’ success.
In addition to this core shift within the competitive landscape, software solution suppliers are being influenced by a number of fundamental changes impacting the embedded industry on the whole, including: - The rapid growth of the mobile device market and the emerging market for device-based services; - The continuing rise in the availability and adoption of open source software; - The availability of more complex system/hardware components/architectures; and - The implementation of more sophisticated engineering methods in order to rapidly deploy more capable, connected embedded devices and systems.
VDC estimates that the embedded operating system market (as defined to include other complementary run-time software and tools sold by operating system suppliers) continues to experience year-over-year growth. In particular, the mobile and wireless portion of this market has fueled recent market expansion and VDC expects trends in this market segment to determine the course of new revenue opportunity in future years.
Although the competitive landscape is very broad in terms of the number of vendors within the market, the leading vendors represented the majority of total revenue. In 2007, VDC estimates that the leading supplier within the embedded/real-time and mobile application operating system market, represented more than one-third of the market, and the top three vendors represented over 75% of total revenue.

Report Scope
Specifically, our analysis includes revenue from companies that offer the above operating system types, in cases where operating system and bundled product revenue represents a majority of product sales. Therefore, also included within this analysis is other licensing revenue for operating system suppliers that may also be derived from: - Development tools; - Middleware; - Product maintenance and support; and - Professional services fees.
Specifically excluded from this analysis is revenue from companies or business units that that derive a majority of revenue from development tools, professional services, and other product that are not specifically associated with the sale of their own operating system. The report contains estimates for 2007 shipments of embedded Linux-related solutions and forecasts of shipments through 2010. Estimates and forecasts of shipments are segmented by: - Product Category - Industry - Geographic Region - Leading Vendor/Supplier (Based on 2007 estimates of shipments)
