Global: Bio-derived Alternative Jet Fuels
Hart Energy Publishing, April 2009, Pages: 16
Although the aviation industry only accounted for 2% of total CO2 emissions around the world in 2008, or 34 billion tons, the drive for alternative fuels in this sector is going forward at a rapid pace. Research and testing continues into alternative jet fuels, both renewable bio-derived and synthetic; however, many challenges remain.
With four successful biojet fuel test flights since 2007, and the certification of Sasol coal-to-liquids (CTL) synthetic jet last year, producers and technology providers are proving that these fuels are in fact viable and can be ideal replacements to petroleum-derived jet fuel. But, since certification and commercialization must happen for these fuels to be used on a widespread basis, it may still be several years before alternative jet fuels can be applied on the commercial market.
