Easy Availability and Lower System Costs Make Touchscreens the Standard Mode of Interaction

Touchscreens enable dynamic user interfaces that are easy-to-use and intuitive. They offer time and effort savings along with increased productivity, thereby emerging as one of the most efficient means of implementing user control. This is especially true in the case of handheld devices, as touchscreens allow the design of the largest display possible for a particular form factor. All types of input devices are adopting touchscreens due to their lower prices and wider availability, compelling vendors to provide the absolute best in performance. Semiconductor manufacturers are alert to these opportunities and have responded by developing ICs that enhance touchscreen performance. 'Touchscreen IC manufacturers are providing turnkey solutions to customers to enable easy integration into their display systems,' says the analyst of this research.

For further increase in touch penetration, touchscreen handset platforms have to be equipped to address certain usability issues such as the lack of crisp multi-sensorial feedback. The timeliness and accuracy of feedback from the input device is vital for a smooth interactive user experience. In a touch environment, visual feedback is critical, while audio feedback can be used as a secondary mechanism. Meanwhile, haptic feedback can help users transition from a key-based device to a touchscreen. 'Touchscreen IC manufacturers are required to tailor their solutions to allow their customers to provide a richer end-user experience,' notes the analyst. 'If greater responsiveness can be built in at the semiconductor level, it is likely to boost the adoption of touchscreens in wider variety of applications.'
