Danaher Medical Device Company Intelligence Report
Espicom Business Intelligence Ltd, March 2011, Pages: 36
Danaher Corporation designs, manufactures and markets medical, professional, industrial and commercial products and services, which are typically characterised by brand names in five business segments: Dental, Life Sciences & Diagnostics, Test & Measurement, Industrial Technologies and Environmental.
This report focuses on the Dental and Life Sciences & Diagnostics segments, which serve four main markets – dental, acute care diagnostics, pathology diagnostics and life sciences research – with brand names such as KaVo, Gendex, iCAT, Instrumentarium, Soredex, Pelton & Crane, Dexis, Ormco, Kerr, Pentron, Sybron Endo, Total Care, Leica, Radiometer and AB Sciex. Combined, the two segments represented just over 31% of Danaher’s total revenue in 2010.
Danaher entered the medical technologies business in 2004 through the acquisitions of Kaltenback & Voigt (KaVo), Gendex and Radiometer. Since then, the company has significantly expanded this business through further company acquisitions, most notably Leica Microsystems (2005), Sybron Dental Specialties (2006), Vision Systems (2007), PaloDEx (2009), AB Sciex and Molecular Devices (2010) and Implant Direct (2010). In 2010, the Dental and Life Sciences & Diagnostics segments generated combined revenue of US$4.2 billion. This is expected to rise to approximately US$7.9 billion a year upon the completion of the acquisition of Beckman Coulter (announced in February 2011), a US-based producer of biomedical diagnostic testing systems.
Danaher’s Test & Measurement segment provides electronic measurement instruments, monitoring equipment, management and optimisation tools for communications networks, and related services that are used in the design, development, manufacture, installation, deployment and operation of electronics equipment and communications networks and services. Also included in the Test & Measurement segment are the company's mobile tool and wheel service businesses.
The company's Environmental segment provides products that help protect water supply and air quality and serves two primary markets: water quality and retail/commercial petroleum.
The Industrial Technologies segment manufactures products and sub-systems that are typically incorporated by customers and systems integrators into production and packaging lines, as well as incorporated by original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) into various end-products. The Industrial Technologies segment consists of two strategic lines of business, product identification and motion, as well as the sensors and controls, aerospace and defence and engine retarder businesses.
In 2010, Danaher generated net earnings of US$1.8 billion on revenues of US$13.2 billion. The group employs approximately 48,200 people worldwide.
