Currently domestic production dominates the glass wool market. Russian products account for 77% of the market, while import is 23%. According to experts, the market is partially import-dependant. In 2005-2007 increase of volumes of construction led to growth of demand for heat-insulation, including glass wool. During these years import from Asia began to grow.

In natural terms, aggregate glass wool consumption volume was around 7 mil. cubic meters. In monetary terms 9520 mil. rub. (retail prices).
In 2007, according to experts, there was no shortage on the market. There were even a few regions with surplus. Workload of most manufacturers decreased, and the market is gradually reaching “maturity”.

“Maturity” first of all means bitter competition on the market. Clear price segments appear on the market, and also a large number of counterfeit products appear on the market. With the availability of good products-substitutes (basalt wool, XPS), glass wool manufacturers try to position their product both on the mass market – in wide consumption segments (construction), and seeking market niches, where there is a lack of at least some products-substitutes or their positions are weak (roof heat insulation, shipbuilding).

The leader in import volume is Saint-Gobain Company. Most products come from Finland – 82% of all deliveries made by Saint-Gobain, 12% from Poland, 4% from The Czech Republic and less than 1% (in total) from China and the UK.
