Reimbursement in the Asthma market -how important is it as a determinant of success?
Datamonitor, Sep 2001
This brief provides an overview of the reimbursement and pricing regulations, of the five major European markets, Japan and the US. The reimbursement of asthma products within each of these markets is discussed, and an analysis of the impact of future changes in regulatory practices is provided. Whilst many aspects of reimbursement are applicable to all diseases, asthma stands out as an area of particular interest. As a chronic, long-term disease asthma places a heavy burden on a country’s healthcare expenditure. In the US, for example, direct health care costs for asthma, such as prescription medications and hospital services, account for more than $9.8 billion annually and indirect costs, such as lost productivity, account for $2.8 billion (American Lung Association). It is this economic burden that is driving governments to examine more effective means to not only reduce costs in this disease area but also to transfer a proportion of the costs to the asthma patient.
