Brief Excerpt from Industry Overview Chapter:
Companies in this industry manufacture woven, tufted, and other types of rugs and carpet using natural and synthetic fibers. Major companies include Shaw Industries, Mohawk Industries, and Beaulieu Group (US); Balta (Belgium); Cavalier (New Zealand); Haima Carpet (China); Oriental Weavers (Egypt); Suminoe Textile (Japan); and Victoria Carpets (UK).
Globally, the carpet and rug industry generates more than $30 billion in revenue. Europe is the leading producer of carpet, and China is a leading carpet exporter. In the wall-to-wall carpet market, Europe and the Asia/Pacific region trail the US in demand. India and China are two of the fastest growing carpet markets, and the Asia/Pacific region is the largest market for all flooring products.
The US carpet and rug manufacturing industry includes about 250 companies with annual revenue of about $9 billion and is expected to grow at a low rate in the next two years. Construction and remodeling activity are the primary growth drivers for the industry.
Demand for carpeting depends on residential and commercial real estate construction and home sales, which can be cyclical. With many costs fixed, profitability of individual companies depends on their volume of business. There are large economies of scale in manufacturing and distribution. The US industry is concentrated: the four largest companies account for about 60 percent of revenue.
