Advances in Coronary Angioplasty: Drug Eluting Stents
Datamonitor, Oct 2001
The development of drug-eluting stents has emerged since the use of stenting became particularly prevalent, especially in the US. Stents are currently used in approximately 70%-90% of cardiovascular interventional procedures and have been shown to reduce the need for repeat percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (Ptca) due to restenosis. There are, however, issues of in-stent thrombosis and in-stent restenosis that need to be addressed when analyzing the results of clinical trial data. Over the next few years, additional long-term studies will aim to provide details of the long-term outcome for drug-eluting stents. In light of recent advances in this field of research, this brief sets out to: *describe the stenting procedure and outline the overall use of stents in coronary interventional procedures *outline recent advances in procedures, such as brachytherapy and sonotherapy, and establish the main advantages and disadvantages of each type of intervention *analyze clinical trial data and company strategies for key drug-eluting stent programs, including in-depth review of sirolimus-eluting, paclitaxel-eluting and actinomycin D-eluting stent trials *compare drug-eluting stent developments against established interventions in order to determine the potential success and patient population for drug-eluting stents *provide a forecasted market size for the drug-eluting stent market to 2005, along with an identification of the key factors influencing the market during this period * analyze the potential impact of drug-eluting stents on pharmaceutical companies, in terms of the affect on the use of anti-thrombotic and anti restenotic agents.
