Stents are currently used in approximately 70%-90% of cardiovascular interventional procedures and have been shown to reduce the need for repeat percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (Ptca) due to restenosis. There are, however, issues of in-stent thrombosis and in-stent restenosis that need to be addressed when analyzing the results of clinical trial data. Over the next few years, additional long-term studies will aim to provide details of the long-term outcome for drug-eluting stents.
