The Quantum Cryptography technology is on the verge of becoming a vital tool for securing privacy and confidentiality of secret communications. Quantum cryptography will potentially find applications beyond government, military agencies, and research institutes to encompass several commercial entities including the large and medium-sized financial companies, police and gaming houses, public utilities, airports, and law and accountancy firms.

Quantum Key Distribution, otherwise quantum cryptography, applies laser beams that are encoded in a form to make any kind of interruption virtually impracticable while transmitting data. Bennett and Brassard’s "BB94" and Charles Bennett’s "B92" are the two popular QKD protocols. QKD, in its early years of growth would be primarily concentrated in North America and Europe. The UK, Germany, and France represent the most promising markets for quantum key distribution products in Europe. The market adoption rate for QKD products would essentially inflate in ensuing years, probably over next two to five years.

Free-Space Technology is undergoing several technical refinements to enable quantum cryptography over long distances. The Free-Space technology enables transmission of stream of photons in air. Communication over a free-space link is realized through satellite communications using "Geo-stationary satellites", and "Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites". Growing from initial trials of a free-space link covering the distance of mere 10kms and subsequently 23.4 kms in 2002, the researchers further achieved yet another breakthrough with successful establishment of a free-space network spanning 144 km of distance more recently.

These and other technical insights are presented in "Quantum Cryptography: A Global Strategic Business Report" announced by Global Industry Analysts, Inc. This new market research report provides a clear insight into technical aspects of conventional and quantum cryptography, besides providing player profiles, recent technology developments, and other strategic industry activities.

Leading global players active in the field of quantum cryptography such as id Quantique SA, MagiQ Technologies, Inc, and SmartQuantum Group S.A. are profiled in this report. The report also discusses other market participants such as Alcatel-Lucent SA, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corp., BBN Technologies, Infineon Technologies AG, International Business Machines Corp., QinetiQ Group PLC, and Toshiba Corp. The research labs of these companies have initiated investigations in the field of quantum cryptography, and are currently heading towards commercialization phase.
