Optimizing Application Delivery
Nemertes Research, June 2009, Pages: 15
Optimizing application delivery over the WAN and the Internet is of increasing interest to organizations of all sizes as they continue to centralize services in a shrinking set of data centers, and as a consequence ever more users reach services over the WAN or the Internet. This report discusses key trends in optimization of service delivery over the WAN and Internet, including trends in both enterprise demand and in vendor emphasis, as well as a taxonomy of optimization strategies, and technologies involved.
Four trends are changing the way organizations must think about application traffic on the network: the increasingly distributed enterprise, the rise of real-time applications, the interconnectivity of IT systems, and the rise in server virtualization and service-oriented architectures (SOAs). As a result of these trends, enterprise application traffic---both end-user-facing and generated as part of applications’ internal workings--is increasingly flowing across the WAN and the Internet. In the face of these changes, the network must become more intelligent and more active in ensuring application performance.
Between 2005 and 2008, the number of branch offices grew an average of 9.2% each year. That, along with more telecommuting, has increased the number of employees working remotely from data centers. About 90% of users get their applications over the WAN because of increased centralization of IT services into data centers coupled with the consolidation of data centers. Yet regardless of location or how they’re connected, users expect the same performance and reliability they would get when sitting at headquarters. With money tight, keeping applications functioning well over the WAN helps keep costs down. Supporting collaboration tools to replace travel or to support a virtual workplace is a wise move, but real-time communications applications such as video conferencing and soft phones have very stringent WAN-performance requirements.
