The new federal regulation is administered by the Federal Trade Commission, (FTC).
'The red flags rule is intended to address all forms of identity theft, including those involving the provision of health care,' according to an FTC document.
'Although identity theft most commonly is associated with financial transactions, there are increasing concerns about identity fraud in the context of medical care,' the agency said.
