This report is a reference book of companies developing technologies, deploying systems and building business models that capitalize on bringing the Smart Grid to the home. It is the result of personal interviews with company management as well as information gathered from publicly available information. In addition, some information was collected from discussions with people familiar with the companies, the electric utility industry, the market for residential home controls, or a combination of these areas. In sum, these profiles provide a snapshot of selected systems currently on the market or in testing that enable utilities and/or consumers to manage, monitor and conserve electricity.

There are many initiatives underway in the U.S. to promote residential energy management and conservation. Electric utilities are deploying Advanced Metering Infrastructures (AMI), which promise benefits such as load shedding and the ability to accommodate alternative energy sources and pinpoint outages.

For consumers, benefits could include reduced energy bills, enhanced comfort and convenience, and a reduction in their carbon footprint. This report is a reference book of companies developing the technologies, deploying the systems and building business models that capitalize on bringing the smart grid to the smart home.

“A key component of AMI is the smart meter, which is a digital meter capable of processing and reporting usage data to providers and households via two-way communication between meters and utility offices,” said Bill Ablondi, Director, Home Systems Research, Parks Associates. “Utilities see the benefit of upgrading the grid, and consumers are growing more conscious of their energy consumption. Add in incentives from the government, and you have three strong drivers that will boost deployment and innovation in this market.”

Company & Alliance Profiles are summaries of an organization’s activities, offerings, and business strategies.

Technology Profiles provide an overview of a technology’s capabilities, positive attributes, and drawbacks, with a summary of firms developing products or supporting the technology.
