Market Overview
Industrial Protective Clothing Market Stays Afloat despite Job Losses in End-user Industries
The healthy growth of the North American industrial protective coating market has slowed down considerably following the economic downturn-induced employment losses in the manufacturing sector. The 17.2 percent growth rate in 2008, which can be mainly attributed to the success of the high visibility garments segment, is expected to drop between 2009 and 2012. The chemical protective clothing segment is one of the worst affected by the job losses due to outsourcing to countries in South America, China, India, and other parts of Asia by cost-conscious North American end users. 'Moreover, a high percentage of people are employed in the service industries in North America,' says the analyst of this research. 'Although service industries also require protective clothing, the level of requirement and degree of complexity are lower than that in the manufacturing industry.' Until the employment conditions improve, market participants will look to offset the dip in market fortunes by focusing on compliance with safety legislation, cost, and wearer comfort. They will also have to heed customer demand for specific work functions, acknowledge the potential for and duration of exposure, as well as ensure product availability.
Despite the falling demand from the heavy manufacturing industry, protective clothing manufacturers will feel buoyed by the rise of other sectors such as emergency response, as well as the mounting popularity of value-added and multifunctional clothing. Further, frequent health scares and pandemics such as avian flu and swine flu are prompting people to use chemical protective clothing to guard against virus and bacteria. Food industry scares can also cause a surge in the demand for chemical protective clothing in particular garments. 'For instance, DuPont produces chemical protective suits such as Tychem®C and Tychem®F, which offer type 3 level protection and are designed to meet the standard requirements,' notes the analyst. 'They are suitable for workers in areas where avian flu outbreaks are suspected.' Nevertheless, due to the unpredictability of such outbreaks, they cannot be counted on as a reliable market driver.
A driver that participants can be sure of is the Federal administration-approved stimulus package of $19 billion for the transportation industry, mainly for spending on highways and airports. Every $1 billion spent on highway construction is estimated to create 42,100 jobs. Of these, 19,750 workers supply highway construction materials and equipment, 14,500 workers are in businesses where construction dollars are spent, and 7,900 workers are at construction sites. This means that for every $1 billion spent on highway, a demand of approximately 8,000 high visibility safety apparels can be created. Apart from these encouraging opportunities, protective clothing manufacturers can take advantage of liability issues that compel companies protect their employees adequately. The market is also expected to gain from the higher sales to the first responder market.
