Market players from both China and other countries have become more enthusiastic for investing in China's acetic acid (AA) industry and thus building large-scale 'carbonylation-of-methanol-to-acetic acid' (CMAA) projects, due to the rapidly increasing demand for acetic acid in recent years, especially because of the emerging coal-to-chemical industry and natural gas-to-chemical industry.

The newly-formed production capacity of acetic acid from CMAA process was 936,000 tons/year in 2007, 1.7 million tons/year in 2008, and is expected to be 1.7 million tons/year in 2009, too, and 1.3 million tons/year in 2010. Counting in the existing production capacity of 1.3 million tons/year, the total capacity in 2010 would be 6.94 million tons/year; the output 5.9 million tons/year if the operating rate of the projects is 85%. The 'ethylene-acetaldehyde-to-acetic acid' process has cut down its output, and some projects have even been totally closed down, due to the high cost caused by the soaring oil prices; it is estimated that the newly-formed production capacity annually would reduce from 455,000 tons to 310,000 tons from 2008 to 2010; and the output in 2010 is expected to be 260,000 tons/year if the operating rate of the projects is 85%.

The newly-formed production capacity of 'alcohol-acetaldehyde-to-acetic acid' process, on the other hand, would increase annually because the output of alcohol would increase, because, in turn, the governmental policies encourage bio-alcohol to replace gasoline for vehicles. In that case, large-scale 'alcohol-to-acetic acid' projects are expected to be built and put into operation, while small-scale projects may be squeezed out of the industry.

It is estimated that the production capacity of 'alcohol-to-acetic acid' would be 730,000 tons/year in 2010, and the output would reach 584,000 tons/year at that time if the operating rate of the projects is 80%. The total production capacity of acetic acid may be 8 million tons/year in 2010, while the output 7 million tons/year.
