Advanced Suspension Technologies to Catalyse Market Growth

Automakers are exploring various possibilities with the use of advanced suspension system technologies to provide the best of both worlds to consumers. However, pricing and affordability remains a big challenge. Market expansion will be supported by the increasing demand for systems that offer best ride with optimal handling capabilities. 'Performance requirements, the need for product differentiation due to market saturation and safety requirements are the core drivers for the growth of automotive advanced suspension technology,' notes the analyst of this research. 'Ride comfort and stability are two key vehicle attributes which influence the purchase decisions of vehicle buyers.'

In testing times, due to the global economic recession, manufacturers are trying to differentiate their products based on suspension technology to entice buyers. Advanced suspension also aids integrated chassis technology to enhance safety.

Today the automobile is more than a medium for point A to B travel. Advanced suspension promotes driving pleasure and helps the automobile to perform better on various road surfaces and terrain. 'Advanced suspension system technology offering can also be a differentiator, giving companies unique brand recognition,' adds the analyst. 'This is an important consideration for companies wanting to attract buyers in tough times.' Advanced suspension system can also be linked to safety modules. They can reduce excessive roll pitch and yaw rates, boosting the safety and stability of the automobile.

As Pricing and Technical Challenges Persist, Focus to be on Simplifying Systems and Achieving Common Components Standards

Advanced suspension systems are expensive, more so active suspension systems even though they deliver excellent value. Extending this value proposition to the customer is a significant challenge. Besides pricing, there are technical challenges such as developing advanced suspension systems that consume less power and weigh less. 'Systems like a fully active suspension are expensive and hence can be found only on some super luxury and sports cars,' explains the analyst. 'It is often a challenge to make customer understand the technology that goes into making such a complicated system and make them pay for it.' Technically, a completely active system is known to consume excessive power and is often bulky, causing manufacturers packaging difficulties. Requirements like these put additional pressure on drivetrain and essentials like fuel efficiency even while the carbon footprint suffers.

'Manufacturers and suppliers must work closely to simplify the system and work for common components standards such as, for instance, electrical systems,' advises the analyst. 'This will help reduce developmental costs and will encourage more suppliers to join in efforts to develop an efficient system that costs less.' Manufacturers and suppliers are jointly developing suspension systems to suit every requirement. Adaptive and semi-active systems are increasingly being offered on models. Newer launches being planned are also likely to have such systems. Economic conditions will determine investments in suspension systems and further penetration into new segments.
