In a recent study, one of the challenges IT leaders faced in deciding which Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) vendor to go with was the speed with which vendors are enhancing their solutions. VMware and Citrix currently dominate the VDI market. Settling on one of these vendors requires some investigation into the offerings of both:
- VMware is an early mover in desktop virtualization and has taken advantage of its success with server virtualization.
- Citrix dominates the application-delivery-to-the-desktop market, thanks to the many years success of Presetation Server. After a slow start in the desktop virtualization space, it has swiftly caught up with VMware and become a serious competitor.
- While existing infrastructure, familiarity with a product, and relationship with a vendor are important reasons to pick a solution, these do not necessarily mean the alternative solution costs more or is harder to implement.
Deciding between the two unique approaches offered by each VDI vendor requires a deeper look into the differences between the two. This note takes an in-depth look at the VMware vs. Citrix equation.
