An attitude and usage study identifying trends and Opportunities in Foodservice

Sandwiches are the most frequently menued entrée on both limited-service and full-service Canadian restaurant menus accounting for 41% of all LSR entrées and 16% of all FSR entrées.

To help operators and suppliers better understand the changing sandwich landscape and areas of growth opportunity, Technomic has developed the 2008 Canadian Sandwich Consumer Trend Report.

Gain an advantage on the competition by:
- Leveraging overwhelming consumer acceptance: target the 78% of consumers who purchase sandwiches away from home at least once every two months. Heaviest usage is for burgers with two-thirds (64%) consuming this type of sandwich once a month or more; lightest usage is for paninis with 10% consuming once a month or more.
- Understanding Canadian consumer preferences and needstates: learn how Canadian consumer preferences differ from their American counterparts. For example, while 58% of American consumers purchase a taco or burrito once a month, less than a
quarter of Canadian consumers (24%) do so. Wraps and submarine sandwiches, on the other hand, are consumed more frequently by Canadian consumers.
- Addressing multiple consumer needstates: maintain precise focus on select daypart trends and purchase motivators by offering sandwich options to the 64% of consumers indicating they will eat a sandwich for a snack.
- Providing niche offerings: utilize foodservice operator reputation for creating higher quality made-to-order sandwich options that are of perceived higher quality than offerings in grab-n-go deli cases.

COMPREHENSIVE COVERAGE AND ACTIONABLE INSIGHTS

This report will consist of the following areas:
- The latest consumer research surrounding sandwich restaurants and their products: An exclusive Technomic survey of more than 500 Canadian consumers showcases attitudes and preferences for sandwiches including interest in health and wellness, innovative sandwich ingredients and side dish accompaniments, just to name a few. Additionally, discover and compare consumer patronage of Canada's leading limited-service chains classified within the “sandwich” category.
- In-depth coverage and analysis of restaurant menus: Comprehensive review by Technomic Information Services' MenuMonitor, a continually-updated online database that houses menu information for 50 restaurant chains throughout Canada. Our in-depth analysis helps operators and manufacturers recognize menu trends among the industry's leading players.
- Menu price comparisons: Menu pricing information and price comparisons givefoodservice operators and manufacturers a better idea of pricing trends within the industry and how their menu item prices stack up against competitors.

EXPANDED DELIVERABLES

In addition to comprehensive reporting on these topics, Technomic experts will provide the following deliverables:
- Competitive Insights: Seven sandwich chains and 10 leading Canadian chains serving sandwiches are ranked by consumers on a series of attributes including food quality, healthy options, value, service and overall dining experience.
- Comprehensive executive summary including insights, implications and areas of opportunity for both operators and manufacturers.
- Concept Profiles: Menus and profiles of 20 quick-service Canadian sandwich chains.
- A complete set of printed data tables on all consumer interviews are provided. The data tables will be tabulated by cluster segments that include: gender, age, ethnicity and household income.

Scope of Coverage
While the Canadian Sandwich Consumer Trend Report focuses primarily on the restaurants classified within the sandwich segment, it is not limited to this restaurant cluster nor is it limited only to sandwiches. Non-sandwich menu offerings from establishments classified within the sandwich category will also be discussed in detail.
