Ethiopia is undertaking massive investments in the hydropower sector. It has planned the commissioning of almost 8 GW before 2015 (four times the current domestic capacity). Power exports through the new interconnections with Djibouti and Sudan have started, and could eventually bring annual revenues of $400m.

Overall, Africa boosted world-wide consumption of crude oil. Significant increase in Nigerian crude oil production offset falls in Algeria, Iraq and Venezuela. South-Africa increased its coal trade surplus by 4.5% during the year, while Algerian natural gas output fell another 12%. Africa also registered a 6% increase in power generation.
