COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Oakstone Institute and Course Director, Ivan Damjanov, MD, PhD, Professor of Pathology, The University of Kansas School of Medicine, are pleased to present The Oakstone Institute’s 2009 Pathology Board Review Course in Chicago, IL, September 16 – 20, 2009.

The Oakstone Institute’s 2009 Pathology Board Review Course is an in-depth review, and provides pathologists and pathologists-in-training with current, relevant, and condensed information needed to pass certification (written and oral exams), recertification, and maintenance of certification exams. It is also valuable if you are simply looking for a great way to keep up with key developments in pathology. A concise format means it will focus only on what is necessary to pass the exam and stay current. More than 15 leading edge presentations will be delivered by faculty selected for their outstanding teaching methods and expertise in targeting ‘must-know’ areas.

Course Director Dr. Damjanov worked with The Oakstone Institute to create a system that guides you through the review process from the time you register through the exam. Dr. Ivan Damjanov is an internationally known pathologist who has achieved worldwide recognition as an author, editor, and educator. An expert in medical communications and a respected educator, Dr. Damjanov has taught generations of medical and graduate students. As the course director, he will pass his expertise in this critical area to you, the attendee.

Dr. Damjanov and the faculty will offer useful exam-taking techniques, as well as tell you what to study (and what not to study), how to study, how to maximize time, and how to gain confidence. You will also receive an intense review of the requisite pathology topics, an area in which many pathologists are less familiar or current. Unlike other courses, Dr. Damjanov and his team will use a digital audience response system that enables the participants to respond to questions that are likely to be asked during an actual exam, receive immediate feedback, and gauge their level of knowledge against others.

This comprehensive and concise 5-day course emphasizes the topics most challenging to master. A complete syllabus consisting of all speaker handouts and other important clinical material is provided.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Pathologist or pathologist-in-training.

MAINTENANCE OF CERTIFICATION

The curriculum is designed to match the subject matter of the specialty board requirements, including current standards of care. The program is a useful tool in aiding practitioners who now are evaluated through the American Board of Pathology Maintenance of Certification process. Board certified physicians must build six core competencies to qualify for quality patient care within their medical specialty: appropriate patient care, application of medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, systems-based practice for optimal care, and practice-based learning and improvement.

A note on the available formats:

DVD: Includes 10 DVDs with carrying case, 1 CD-ROM syllabus, activity pretest, and posttest/evaluation.

*Subject to change.

Contents: The course will be divided into two major parts. The first two days will cover Anatomical Pathology and will offer an optional histopathology slide review. The last three days will be devoted to Clinical Pathology.
