The financial crisis which has gripped the world for the last two years has begun to ease and signs of recovery are becoming more widespread; not least in the emerging markets. Latin America, despite having suffered set-backs in many of the region's countries, is bouncing back from the meltdown and is proving to the financial world that it is a region which has overcome many challenges and prejudices to develop into a strong and stable financial environment, with exciting potential for investment and business in general.

With exclusive contributions from key players in the Latin American markets, debating highly topical subject matter and giving informed analyses and predictions, The LatAm Financial Markets Handbook 2010 provides essential reading and reference material for those involved in, or considering involvement in, the LatAm region. Country reviews from leaders in their field and regional overviews written by people at the forefront of the policy making, make this Handbook crucial for getting to grips with the local financial environment.

Latin America is definitely a region to watch in the coming year, as it continues to strive for a more prominent position in the global financial markets; a feat it is achieving more steadily than ever before.

Excerpt

“Latin America’s economic performance has improved tremendously over the last few years. The region grew by almost 5.5% per year on average during the period from 2004 to 2008; a sustained pace of expansion that had not been achieved since the 1970s. And, unlike previous periods of high growth, the current spell has taken place in an environment of stable inflation, falling external debt and improving public finances in most of the continent’s larger economies.

The region’s strong growth performance owed much to very supportive external conditions, at least until the worsening of the global financial crisis following the demise of Lehman Brothers in September 2008. External credit had been plentiful, sovereign risk spreads had narrowed, and credit ratings had improved for a number of countries.”

Luiz de Mello, Head of Brazil/South America Desk, OECD Economics Department
