The offered payment methods in online shops are critical success factors.
For avoiding shopping on the Internet to fail at the virtual checkout, dealers must offer a wide range of payment solutions. For each online merchant the choice of payment methods is a critical decision that may have an impact on sales. The best choice depends on the need for security, cost efficiency and customer acceptance. However, few traders know the cost the involvement of the various payment options causes.
Due to the increasing competition in the German online market, it becomes even more important for providers to understand the needs of customers. The best choice of offered payment methods depends on the need for security, cost efficiency and customer acceptance. 66% of the surveyed online retailers prefer prepayment as a payment method. In 2008, the e-payment system Paypal was implemented in almost half of all surveyed online stores. However, nearly 85% of European e-commerce transactions were processed 2006/2007 with a credit card, while just over 8% paid by direct debit.
