Cotton Farming in the US
IBISWorld, Dec 2010, Pages: 34
Tangled threads: Reliance on foreign markets keeps industry revenue volatile
Cotton Farming in the US
Tangled threads
Though cotton farmers can expect their revenue to grow in the coming years, the industry will remain wildly unpredictable. Its growing reliance on export demand will increase its sensitivity to global factors like exchange rates, international supply and even weather patterns. Furthermore, government subsidies to farmers are increasingly coming under fire, and are sometimes not enough to keep farms in the industry. To increase revenue and profit, farmers will try to offer higher-value products like American Pima or organic cotton.
Farms in this industry primarily grow cotton. Cotton is typically used in textile manufacturing while cottonseed is used for its oil and in some livestock feeds. At least half of all cotton produced domestically is exported to overseas textile producers.
This report covers the scope, size, disposition and growth of the industry including the key sensitivities and success factors. Also included are five year industry forecasts, growth rates and an analysis of the industry key players and their market shares.
