Example of a story:

UAE fixed and mobile operator Etisalat announced during October 2010 that it was to introduce a femtocel service in partnership with Alcatel-Lucent with the intention of launching a converged commercial service by the end of 2010. The aim of the service is to allow Mobile Broadband users in remote areas - or in high usage urban areas - of the UAE to offload their mobile data usage onto Etisalat's fixed line Broadband network. Etisalat is the first telecoms operator in the Middle East to announce that it intends to launch a femtocel service.Etisalat is one of a number of telecoms operators around the world which has introduced a femtocel service over the last 12 months. In the July edition of the TCL Triple Play & Quad Play Journal subscription service TCL provided a summary of the recent femtocel announcements - which we have now updated below.

In all cases, the differentiator for femtocel services is the ability to provide improved in-house (or office) mobile coverage. Pricing for the service varies - either it is a once off purchase fee to cover router costs or a per month rental fee. New femtocel introductions include:

- China Unicom: In December 2009 introduced a "3G Inn" for the Northern Provinces of China including Beijing with a 2Mbps Broadband service and a monthly fee.

- SFR France: In December 2009 introduced a "SFR Home 3G" with a cost of 199 Euro for the router. The router connects to a SFR 3G handset and DSL Broadband with up to 4 simultaneous calls or internet sessions

- Optimus Portugal: In December 2009 introduced a femtocel service called "Sinal On" for a purchase cost of 99.90 Euro plus a monthly cost of 7.80 Euro with up to 50 minutes of fixed to mobile calls to Portugal and Spain again with 4 simultaneous voice or internet calls.

- Vodafone UK: In January 2010 relaunched its femtocell service under its "Sure Signal" brand replacing "Vodafone Access Gateway" with a router purchase price of 60 Euro reduced from 170.

- AT&T USA: In April 2010 launched its femtocel service called MiceoCell for a once-off purchase price of $149.99 USD plus a monthly rate plan that allows unlimited calls over the router device.

- Tele2 Sweden: In April 2010 introduced a femtocel service called "Tele2 Hemtelfoni via mobilnatet", provides up to 5 devices to be connected to a 6Mbps DSL line. For voice telephony there is a charge of 10 Euro per month or a charge of 23 Euro per month for a combined data and telephony use.

- Vodafone Spain in June 2010 introduced a femtocel service aimed at enterprise users called "Voz y Datos Premium Oficina Vodafone". There is a fee of 15 Euro per month.

- Movistar Spain: in September 2010 introduced a femtocel service for business and consumer users called "Cover my mobile" which is only available to Movistar ADSL users of 3Mbps Broadband or above for a rental fee of 9 Euro per month.
